Workshop Descriptions

Parental Rights, Virtual Charter Schools and Other Legal Issues

SCHEA Board

In today’s highly political world we need to keep abreast of what’s happening all around us, even if we would really rather bury our heads in the sand. SCHEA Board members will update you on what is going on in Washington D.C. as well as Columbia that can/will affect you as a home schooler.

Seven Steps to Choosing Curricula

Misty Spinelli

Does the homeschool curricula explosion have you in tears over the increasingly difficult decision of what to buy each year? This workshop will guide you step by step through a process which will help you dry your eyes and move on with your schooling. It will show you how to apply what you already know about yourself and your children to weed out many of the options and zero in on what is important to you and your homeschool. Included in the steps are: goal setting, discovering your teaching style, the importance of your child(s) learning style, investigating educational philosophies, and much more.

TeenPact: Why Students Are Passionate About TeenPact

Beth Baxa

Come hear from a TeenPact family and find out why your students will want to be a part of this educational, hands-on, leadership program. Reticent first-time attendees come to TeenPact as skeptical students and leave the week as passionate, empowered citizens, ready to impact their culture. This hands-on civics course offers an incredible platform for rhetoric, interpersonal communication and current events. TeenPact believes there is a great need for godly, powerful communication within any arena and the goal is to train up a generation of young people to fill that need. Come find out how your students can get involved in this incredible opportunity.

"Celebrating--SC History!"

Cynthia Spratley

Multiple ages and learning styles can enjoy exploring the history of our great state of South Carolina. Cynthia Spratley will share ideas gleaned from years of teaching homeschoolers about the Palmetto State.

Dual Enrollment—What Is It and Why Should I Do It?

Laura Sturgis

Homeschoolers at York Technical College--What do they look like? What do they major in? What classes do they take? How do they perform in relation to their traditionally educated counterparts? Ever wonder if you are prepared for college? Come learn what homeschoolers tell us about their preparation for study at the college. Gather information about dual credit courses and what the advantage is. Listen to Laura Sturgis and Kenny Aldridge (Admissions Department Manager) help you work through the application process.

Leaders Meeting

SCHEA Board

SCHEA Board members would love to meet with all the leaders who attend the Expo. Leaders include those who are on the board of support groups or accountability groups, co-op leaders, other who hold positions of responsibility within groups, or those who aspire to hold such positions. We want to know how we can better serve you as a state organization and what questions you might have for us.

So Many Ways Your Children Learn through Books

Misty Spinelli

There are many ways in which your children’s learning can be enhanced through the use of great books. Using “living books” as defined by Charlotte Mason we can allow our children to experience amazing amounts of information and knowledge about history, science, mathematics, humanity, character, nobility, relationships, and so much more. But how to best utilize these books within the homeschool can sometimes be a mystery. Misty will help explain the importance of classics over textbooks and will discuss many avenues that will get great books going in your home. She will explain how narration works and how to utilize it with your children, how to have books discussions, how to choose books, when to read them, etc. You will come away inspired and wanting to read to your children tomorrow!

HOMESCHOOL ABC'S

Kate Bach

We've all started somewhere, but jumping into homeschooling after your child has attended traditional school can be intimidating. What do you teach? How do you teach? Can you teach? Can you teach as well as their professionally trained teachers? On and on the doubts run rampart over your desire to homeschool-- weakening the call to make a difference in your child's life through home centered education. You may also be wondering if you might ruin your child's learning ability forever. You won't, you can't! There is not one best way to homeschool-- only one best way for each of your children. Let us help you discover your 'bests'. We will discuss the many choices regarding teaching style, curriculum, schedules and etc. We will answer questions about portfolios, daily lesson plans, what constitutes 'school'-- relaxed to vigorous.

The Benefits of Debate

Julie Ridenour

What would possess a high school student to spend hours researching a subject like Environmental Policy or Medical Malpractice? Why on earth would a family commit 3 to 12 days of "school time" during the spring semester to participate in debate tournaments? At first, the time invested in debate may seem like an enormous commitment, but when weighed against the benefits, the cost is negligible. Come listen as Julie shares the benefits and the return on their family's time spent participating in debate.

Biblical Worldview

Louis Lemmon

Academics are meaningless apart from a Biblical worldview. Solomon said so in Ecclesiastes. Using Christian materials isn't enough. In an increasingly morally relevant world, students must develop a keen filter through which to discern Truth from sophisticated error. Home schooling offers both the time and format for the parent-child studies and discussions necessary for developing a Biblical worldview. This is the discipling admonition in Deuteronomy chapter 6. But how to jump in? This session answers that question: * See though simple overview why is it vital for parents to understand and seize the opportunity to engage worldview studies. * Experience examples of how worldview comes into play in studies and life Consider a progression by age for increasing worldview study complexity. * Receive a variety of recommended curriculum resources and sample year syllabus

Questions and Answers

SCHEA Board and Veteran Home Schooling Moms

This is a panel discussion for everyone—newbies and veterans to home schooling; leaders and followers. Bring your questions about home schooling, about leadership, about events, about what’s happening in the world of home schooling and our panel of “homeschool experts” will make every effort to answer your questions.

History, For All My Kids?

Misty Spinelli

It may seem daunting to try and teach history to several kids at different age levels, but don’t let that deter you. History can be the most fun and rewarding subject you teach. Some moms feel that the only way they can teach history to multiple levels is to buy each one their own history textbook and let them work on their own. But history can be a great core subject for you to hang other subjects onto such as writing, literature, and art, if you learn how to utilize a unit study approach to just that one subject. All your kids can enjoy learning together, discussing together, and you can get more taught in a shorter period of time.

The Classical Education Model

Wende Whitus

Have you ever wondered what Classical Education is all about? Or, are you currently using a Classical approach but are unsure how to sustain it though the high school years? If so, this workshop is for you! We will cover the three stages of the Classical model (grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric), how to apply the tools of learning in order to master any subject, and how to apply the Classical model at home.

HIGH SCHOOL NEED TO KNOWS

Darrell Bach

You have stayed the course and completed the middle school years and you now find yourself with recurring Next-Level-Fears. What do you need to offer your highschooler? Are you equipped to do this? Highschool was not so easy and fun the first time, do you want to do it a second time? We will help you understand the state's requirements and provide you with a road map to navigate grading, transcripts, testing, electives and a four-year academic plan. Come discover the difference of homeschooling towards highschool vs. homeschooling towards college and the excitement and wonder of the home school high school years.
