50+ Practical Ideas to Help Your Learning Disabled Child Succeed (Jan Wells)

Over 4 million school aged children have a learning disability of some kind. Of these 20% have a disorder that leaves them unable to focus on learning. This workshop, as the title suggests, will provide the attendees with a handout of suggestions they can implement immediately into their daily learning lives. Jan Wells was a public school teacher for 26 years in her home country of New Zealand as well as schools in Canada and the USA. Jan is a reading specialist who has used Unit Studies to teach reading with both competent and struggling readers.

Surviving and Appreciating Boys (Hal & Melanie Young)

Learning should be fun and engaging as well as academically challenging. The Six Red Marbles programs were developed to help kids learn and give parents feedback on their development. This workshop will focus on early learning math and language arts as well as middle school math. Mary Anne taught school in SC for 15 years. She left teaching to join Scholastic as an education consultant and has been a part of the Six Red Marbles team for 10 months

Gettysburg, the Second Day: A Living History Dramatization (Bob Farewell)

Writing Roads (Elysabeth Eldering)

"Writing Roads" a workshop for children ages 8-12 covers a brief delve into the writing world with a quick creative writing assignment, and also fits into the geography aspect of Ms. Eldering's series, the Junior Geography Detective Squad, 50-state, mystery, trivia series, by taking the teams across the United States on an imaginative game called "Road Trip." The teams will compete for prizes. This game encourages working as a team along with creativity. Note: workshop is geared for ages 8 and up with younger ones who participate with siblings receiving prizes as well. Parents are welcome to stay in the workshop but are not allowed to participate in the game.) Elysabeth Eldering is a traveler from birth. She has traveled with her family due to her father being in the military. She has lived in several states and overseas during her childhood. Ms. Eldering calls South Carolina home these days. She entered her first writing contest at the age of 41 and took second place for a children's mystery story, which has inspired her to take that story and write a series for children, the premise being that each state would be the mystery. Each book concentrates on one state and there are supplemental study guides available, which take the series cross curriculum.
