20th Annual Statewide Convention

Nurturing Our Children: The Heart of Parenting

Key Note Speaker: Paul Tripp

June 18-19, 2010

since the 2010 Convention closed

Last updated 29 June 10

We will be looking for any good, new or gently used homeschooling textbooks, reading books, educational games (with all the pieces), or other supplies for our Single Moms' workshop. They will be distributed first to our single moms, with the remainder offered to any homeschool families in need. All materials donated in past years were given to good homes with grateful parents. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of homeschoolers who have blessed many families with their books.

College Fair

Friday 12-2pm

As has become traditional for the SCHEA Convention, we will be doing a college fair this year. However, due to the keynote presentations by Paul Tripp, we have changed the time for our college fair. This year it will be from 12-2 pm Friday, immediately following the first keynote presentation. Dozens of colleges have been invited and we anticipate a great turnout. Please keep checking the web site for names and links to those colleges that have verified they will be with us. And remember the new time!

    Harmony Youth Group Ages 5-12

We are Harmony Youth Group (HYG) and we will have the privilege of heading up the children's program this year at the Annual State Convention in Sumter, South Carolina. Harmony Church is an evangelical non-denominational church located in Sumter. We have a large number of homeschool families at our church and are very excited about having this opportunity with your children. HYG is preparing for a mission trip to Puerto Rico in July, and the same VBS material used on our trip will be used with your children during the convention. It will consist of lessons, crafts and games, as well as songs and skits. Weather permitting, we plan to conduct much of our activities outside, so please have your child wear appropriate shoes and clothing. The team consist of adults and teenagers who have experience working with children of all ages. We look forward to seeing you then.

    Teen Program

This year we will not be doing a separate Teen Conference as we have in the past. Because of our Featured Speaker we will be encouraging our teens to attend all the Keynote Sessions. However, we will be having a number of special times for the teens.

College Fair is scheduled at a new time--Friday from noon till 2:00 pm after the first keynote session. During this time we are also offering two sessions with Dr. Jim Overton of College Consultants. Dr. Overton has over 27 years of experience working with teens and their parents getting scholarship money for college. You should have time to attend one of these (identical) sessions as well as spending time with our college representatives.

During the first workshop time (Friday from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm) Bill Page will be offering a workshop especially for teens on Making Money Work. The second session (Friday 3:30-4:30) Jim Roberts from Crown Financial will be teaching budgeting for teens. In our current economy, these are both lessons that can never be learned too early.

Saturday from 11:00 am to noon, Elizabeth Hartley will be speaking to teens about scholarships opportunities. And in our last two sessions, Ron Leonard from Christian Aid Mission offers a workshop on Prayerline for Teens which includes curriculum suggestions for missions, social studies and spiritual formation. Finally, Rachel Ward offers a workshop for those who are planning on entering the workforce without attending college. You will glean much practical information from this workshop.

We are hoping that our teens will benefit greatly from this opportunity to experience the workshops that are especially geared to them. All teens, of course, are free to sit in on any of the workshops that are offered and are not restricted to just the teen workshops. However, we will appreciate it if they do not wander the campus alone.
